Next-generation HIMACS Solid Surface offers many benefits such as heat resistance, durability, and easy maintenance. Let’s take a look at how this revolutionary material is manufactured.
How Is HIMACS Made?
HIMACS is one of the brands under LX Hausys, Korea’s largest building and decorative materials company. HIMACS is composed mainly of the natural mineral aluminum hydroxide (ATH) obtained from bauxite (aluminum ore). Other materials include acrylic resin and natural pigments.
The process starts in a lab where the ingredients are selected and tested for superior quality. Cutting-edge technology pulverizes the minerals and blends them with acrylic polymer resins and natural pigments. Then, through a special thermal and compression process in a vacuum, the mixture is put onto a steel conveyor belt in sheet form or molds. As the material moves on the conveyor belt, it is put through a two-stage thermal curing process. The second stage is what sets HIMACS apart, creating a stronger and more durable surface than natural stone but that can also emulate the look of granite or marble. HIMACS’ state-of-the-art manufacturing process also conforms to exacting environmental standards.
What Can HIMACS Be Used for?
HIMACS is incredibly versatile and can be used for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, reception areas and worktops. It can also be used for 3D installations such as point-of-sale displays. There are unlimited possibilities for commercial and residential design.
HIMACS is thermoformable meaning it can be easily fabricated in the same way as wood, and can be heated and bent, enabling the product to meet the most challenging 3D designs. There are no limits to what you can design with HIMACS solid surface.
There are a wide variety of sinks and bowls available, some of which can be seamlessly integrated into a kitchen or bathroom countertop. The multipurpose material can also be used as luxurious wall cladding or exterior façades.
In addition, because of its hygienic properties, HIMACS is the perfect solution for hospitals, surgical rooms and healthcare. The non-absorbent surface and seamless joints leave no room for bacteria. It’s ideal for public spaces such as airports, hotels and waiting rooms where germs are easily spread, including public restrooms.
Benefits of HIMACS Solid Surface
HIMACS is a non-porous, smooth surface that offers many benefits but the primary reason many designers and homeowners turn to solid surfaces is that damage can be repaired. Minor damage can be fixed by savvy homeowners without special equipment. But even deep scratches can be resurfaced by a professional thanks to HIMACS sealant-free consistency.
Small burn marks are easily removed using a scouring agent or an abrasive sponge. Rubbing the surface with a scouring pad will also enhance its high-gloss appearance. Pointed or sharp-edged objects that leave cuts or scratches on the HIMACS surface are easily repaired without too much trouble.
HIMACS’ durability is similar to that of natural stone and the products can stand up to everyday wear and tear. It comes with a 15-year warranty that protects against manufacturing defects after the initial installation. With proper care and maintenance, HIMACS will remain beautiful for many years.
HIMACS Countertop Specific
HIMACS is a completely homogeneous material, which means you can easily clean it with a damp cloth or sponge and mild detergent. You can also use a domestic scouring agent on all matte finishes. It is also useful to wipe your surface occasionally with a scouring agent or wet sponge to retain the even finish of your product.
Tougher stains, caused by food coloring, tea or fruit juice can easily be removed using a bleaching agent (but don’t leave it in contact with HIMACS for more than five minutes). Clean the surface with a domestic all-purpose cleaner and rinse with clean water.
HIMACS’ ease of care and resistance to almost all household chemicals make it an excellent option for many designs.
HIMACS Solid Surface Cost
Every installation is different and the cost of a solid surface depends on the size and the complexity of the design. Costs can also vary based on which colors or patterns are selected.
However, compared to other options on the market, solid surface is affordable, especially considering its many advantages. Most solid surfaces cost between $20 and $50 per square foot, fabricated and installed to your specifications.
